description

Opengear’s CMx86 enables System Managers and OEMs to use their surplus PC platforms to build quality fully featured console servers. It includes a four port multiport card and the feature rich CMx86 console server software package.

The CMx86 software is okvm based and is the same as used in Opengear’s CM4000 line. So CMx86 enables system and network managers to securely control the servers and network appliances in their data centers. A gateway can be set up with CMx86 to support secure in-band and out-of-band connections to serial console ports of target servers and other network devices from management stations on the local network, on the enterprise WAN or across the internet.

The CMx8604 kit has all the pieces needed to convert PC platforms into full featured console servers. The CMx86 software supports unlimited users and a range of third party multiport cards. Opengear also supplies an affordable line of quality multiport cards that will enable users to add more ports to their console server.

Simple and Secure
Console servers provide a simple and secure solution for accessing, monitoring, and controlling multiple servers and appliances from a single console. They provide the manager with direct console access for troubleshooting and diagnostics, and enable them to reconfigure and reboot servers and appliances. Managers can connect both locally and remotely. A console server at a remote site can be accessed In-band (through the Internet network), or Out-of-band (through a dial-up modem connection to the console server’s modem port). Similarly a console server located locally can be accessed In-band (through the office TCP-IP network), or Out-of-band (through a telnet serial connection to the console server’s console/modem port) or through the PC VGA screen/keyboard.

All connections are secure, with encrypted access to remote systems using up to 128-bit AES encryption. The console server also provides a selection of filtering and access logging facilities. All console logs can be archived off line. Also access can be restricted by IP address or password, or account. So managers can securely control and manage their distributed networks of servers and appliances.

Open Source
Opengear’s products are built on open source standards. They embody the strength and security of Linux and they enable users to customize management solutions to meet their own needs. The CMx8604 console management solution has a simple Web browser interface so the manager can easily configure the appliance, the access security, and the console ports. However, the manager also can interface directly, at the command line, with the Linux kernel running inside the CMx8604. Opengear takes a lead role in the development of open source console management and KVM technology. The CMx8604 is supplied with okvm source code and the freedom under open source to be uniquely configured and customized to meet the System Administrator’s or IT Manager’s needs.
